What you need

To apply for SNAP benefits, you need to provide personal information. This includes your Social Security number (if you have one), birth date, home address (if you have one), income, and expenses. 

You may need more information in certain situations:

  • If you are applying for other people in your household - their personal information
  • If you want someone to apply or get SNAP benefits for you – their contact information

You will need to prove your income, expenses and other information:

  • We will tell you what proof you need to give us after your interview
  • To receive a decision as soon as possible, send these documents in with your application. The application lists examples of documents you can send us if they apply to you

What happens after you apply for SNAP benefits?

1. We will contact you to schedule an interview

  • You can have the interview over the phone or at a local office.
  • We will provide an interpreter if you do not speak English.

2. You will need to prove the information you tell us 

  • You need to prove your income and expenses
  • You may need to prove more information, which we will explain to you once you have had your interview.

3. You can send us the proof in 1 of 4 ways

  • DTA Connect:

    Download the free mobile app if you have a smartphone or tablet to upload and submit your documents to us.
     
  • DTA Office Scanner:

    Use the free scanner in the lobby of each DTA office to scan your documents to the DTA Document Processing Center.
     
  • Fax your documents along with the DTA mail/fax cover sheet to:

4. You will get an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card

  • You may get the EBT card before we decide if you are eligible for benefits. This allows you to access your benefits, if you are eligible, as soon as they are available. 

5. You will get a decision within 30 business days

  • You will get a decision letter in the mail telling you if you qualify. If we approve your application, we will tell you your benefit amount and when you will get your benefits. If we deny your application, we will tell you why.
  • You can appeal the decision. Your decision letter tells you how you can file an appeal.
  • You can file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) if you believe we discriminated against you.

6. You can use your EBT card to shop for food if you are eligible for benefits.

  • When you get your EBT card, you will also get more information on how to use it.

Can someone help me apply for SNAP benefits?

You can ask someone you trust to apply for you or go food shopping for you. That person is your authorized representative. Tell us who your authorized representative is in your application. You and your authorized representative will need to fill out the Request to choose someone to be my authorized representative.

I need help because of a disability

We may be able to help. We can give you extra help called accommodations. Accommodations can make working with us easier. If you think you need extra help, tell a DTA staff member.

What can I buy?

You can only buy certain foods using your EBT card like vegetables, meat, cereal, and eggs.
